Your clearance:

N1295U cleared to DuPage via radar vectors to intercept V177 JOT as filled.  Climb and Maintain 3000 expect 5000 10 minutes after departure.  Departure freq 121.0 Squawk 2631.

Based on that clearance, when do you climb to 5000 feet?
A.  You can climb to 5000 feet automatically 10 minutes after take off.
B.  When ATC tells you to climb to 5000 feet.
C.  If you lose communications then start the climb to 5000 feet 10 minutes after take off.
D.  All of the above
E.  B & C only

Chris,

I'm sure you've seen this as well, but another thing I've seen with a clearance like this is unlike an FMS system which will give the student an error when entering KJVL.V177.JOT in the flight plan, the Garmin will happily accept KJVL..JOT. Obviously KJVL to JOT is not V177.

Keep up the blog, great information!

Rich,

You're right. I've seen this come up on a couple of rides or during training. It will give ATC fits! In some places (like in the Rocky Mts) it can set you up for controlled flight into terrain.
